Multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-literate, multi-competent – pressures to be multiple surround us. World language teachers feel compelled to address these “multi” learning goals for our increasingly diverse students. Can we do it all? In this presentation, Professor of French & Applied Linguistics and former Director of the Center for Second Language Studies at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Scott will review the notion of “multi-competence” and its implications for addressing these demands in the second/foreign language classroom. Ultimately, a multi-competence approach sets the stage for transformative learning at all levels of study.

Sponsored by the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies and the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
