Language Requirement and Placement Examinations

The completion of FRE 2220 or the equivalent is required for students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, with a major in other areas of the College of Arts and Sciences, and with selected majors in other colleges. Students with no prior experience in French can fulfill this requirement by taking FRE 1120, FRE 1121 (4 hrs each) and FRE 2220 (4hrs).

A student who has received credit for any college-level French course at another institution must continue the sequence at FSU at the nearest equivalent level and complete FRE 2220 to fulfill the language requirement. A student who has taken French in high school and has never enrolled in any college-level French course may exempt the first levels of college French through the CLEP or a placement exam.
