Professor Emeritus Alec Hargreaves, the founding director of the Winthrop-King Institute recognizes an American hero's centenary
When Professor Alec Hargreaves was at Florida State University, he would often go with his wife Trish to Appalachicola and stay at the Gibson Inn. Eventually he noticed a discrete monument to a Willoughby Ryan Marks, a soldier from the area killed at the end of World War I. He researched the information surrounding Lt. Mark's death and his burial in the cemetery in France near the Ardennes Forest. Recently Professor Hargreaves, along with Professor Bill Cloonan, Emeritus Professor of French and former chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, visited the area. Professor Hargreaves sent an essay about his research and experiences in the cemetery to the local Appalachicola newspaper which published the following piece.
