Japanese Undergraduate Programs

The Japanese Program offers a comprehensive undergraduate program (major and minor) in Japanese Language and Culture, as well as major with a concentration in Business, and a co-major with Chinese. Students must earn a final grade of C- or higher in all courses taken to fulfill the major and minor requirements outlined below.


Japanese MAJOR

The major in Japanese Language and Culture requires 30 semester hours numbered above JPN2220 including a minimum of six semester hours at the 4000-level. A maximum of three semester hours from the following coursework may count toward the thirty semester hour requirement: JPN 2501r, JPN 1112r, JPN 1301r, JPN 1132, JPN 1133. A maximum of nine semester hours in Japanese culture and literature can count toward the thirty semester hour requirement.

Note: To complete the Japanese major, students are highly encouraged to take at least one course from the following list of 3000-level core culture courses:

Japanese MINOR

The minor requires twelve semester hours in Japanese courses numbered above JPN 1121, which may include a maximum of three semester hours from the following coursework: JPN 2501r, JPN 1112r, JPN 1301r, JPN 1132, JPN 1133. Credit extended in meeting the foreign language requirement for graduation may not be used in satisfying the minor.

The Japanese minor allows students to choose any combination of courses in language and culture (e.g., literature, film, manga, etc.).
